Spend time with God and make it your own!
This week has been one of those that makes me feel like a failure. I haven't gotten as much done as I wanted to, I haven't worked out like I usually do, and the biggest thing: I haven't gotten as much time with God.
Getting time with God is something that I always make a priority but when I fail to have it I put myself down. I critique my spiritual life and I doubt if I love God as much as I claim to. I think because I didn't get an hour of prayer and reading that God doesn't care about what I have to say.
This is a lie that many christians tell themselves. It is something I have just started digging into because I realized how ridiculous I was being!
Time with God does not have a time requirement. Everyones life looks different and whatever you are able to do is more than enough for God. Whether that looks like saying a prayer in the carpool line or getting an hour to pray, ALL of it is holy.
We need to stop putting ourselves down for the time we don't get to spend with God and make the most of the time we do have with Him.
We also need to get out of the habit of comparing our time with God to others. Some people are into devotionals, some are into reading plans. Some like to pray out loud, some like to pray silently. Your time with God should be personal and intimate. Whatever makes you feel the closest to your Father is perfect in His eyes.
When I started to practice an intimate time with God I found myself very intimidated. I thought I had to go into a deep study every day followed by prayer and meditation. I don't want to put down anyone who’s time with God looks like this, it just wasn't for me! As you can probably predict, it didn't last very long. My time with God started to feel like a chore I had to check off my list. I found myself not looking forward to it and trying to do everything else before sitting down and doing these laborious tasks.
Intimacy with God should not feel like a chore. It’s sacred. It’s how you cultivate your relationship with Him. And everyones looks differently. We were all made with different personalities and love languages. We all need different routines to communicate with the Lord because He speaks to all of us differently.
All of this being said, you need to have a moment with God everyday. Whatever that looks like. The only way we will grow our relationship with the Lord is if we pursue Him. We need to call on His name and surrender everyday. He is our daily artist, He has painted everyday of our lives out for us on a beautiful canvas that He has specially made. He is the lamp to our feet, the light to our path.
If you are struggling to set time aside everyday, let me make a suggestion. Begin each day with Him, first thing. As soon as you open your eyes say a prayer and let your feet hit the floor knowing you are filled with the love of Christ. Our spirits shift when we acknowledge our Creator before anything else. He should be our first priority, our first thought of the day. God hears us, God sees us, God is present with us, God loves us.
